Cuba ratified this Monday its commitment to the defense of non-independent peoples, after its election as a member of the Bureau of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization.

The island’s alternate permanent ambassador to the organization Yuri Gala highlighted his country’s unwavering will to fight for the self-determination and independence of all nations and peoples under colonial power.

“We receive this responsibility as a commitment to continue working to advance a genuine process that contributes to ensuring that the will of their people is heard in these 17 non-independent territories,” added the representative.

In particular, the Cuban diplomat insisted on the demand that the people of Puerto Rico be able to exercise their inalienable right to free self-determination and independence.

“It is time to strengthen our ties and the coordinated effort to move towards the eradication of colonialism, as soon as possible,” said Gala.

The Cuban ambassador warned about the existing challenges on the way to meeting the goals set in the 2030 Agenda in this regard.

We appreciate that there are still too many challenges and barriers, which seriously endanger the Organization’s Objectives on this issue, he considered.

The UN Special Committee on Decolonization was established by the UN General Assembly to examine the implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, as well as to make suggestions and recommendations.

In addition, it annually reviews the list of Non-Self-Governing Territories and listens to the statements of their representatives in annual sessions.

The body also aims to send visiting missions to these territories and hold regional seminars annually.

The Committee is made up of 29 members and its Board of Directors has a president, three vice-presidents and a rapporteur.
