Priest Alberto Reyes on violence in Cuba: “It is something widespread”

Priest Alberto Reyes, of the Archdiocese of Camagüey, considered that violence in Cuba is not a phenomenon that exclusively involves young people but “something widespread.”

In statements to Martí News The father expressed his concern about the climate of violence and tension prevailing in Cuban society, as a result of the massive fight over the weekend at La Finca de los Monos in Havana, where six teenagers were injuredaccording to government statistics.

“Yes, there is a very significant increase in violence. In fact, we are worried, scared (…), we no longer come out with the same confidence as before. It is a new and very worrying phenomenon. I believe that the young element does more dramatic, but it is something generalized,” he stressed.

Reyes expressed that in recent weeks social indiscipline, violence and disorder have increased, which is evident in the complaints on social networks.

“People are upset and, therefore, people are very irascible, very susceptible,” explained the priest, who attributes this discomfort to the economic crisis on the island and the lack of values in society.

“We must keep in mind that we are the product of generations grown without valuesThat is to say, here the values have been cultivated by the church and those families in which they have been maintained by family tradition, but we are not a country that has opted to educate generations in values because the only value has practically been that of fidelity to the political spectrum,” he argued.

This Tuesday, the murder of a Cuban jeweler last Saturday in Havana, who was shot to the mouth in the middle of the street.

This event is also part of the growing crime in Cuba, where in the last week several deaths have been reported in different areas of the country.
