Within the framework of the activities for the 30th anniversary of the creation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) and the celebration of World Environment Day, Sancti Spíritus focuses its work on reducing the ecological footprint and effective introduction of the circular economy.
Our demarcation stands out for taking safe steps in the implementation of the principles of the circular economy and in a group of production processes based on innovation, which achieve efficiency in the use of resources and contribute to the mitigation of greenhouse gases. Néstor Álvarez Cruz, deputy delegate of the Environment in this region, said this Tuesday.
He highlighted that this change from linear to circular economic thinking, plus the transformation of the energy matrix, constitute an opportunity to achieve the sustainability that production and service processes so need.
Only the efficient use of resources and the reduction of pressure on ecosystems will provide the necessary viability for the prosperous and sustainable future that Cuba aspires to, he clarified.
During an event held this Tuesday in this city, the territorial delegation of Citma awarded Héctor Martín Hernández the Provincial Environment Award, the highest distinction conferred to recognize those who have dedicated their work to the solution or mitigation of environmental problems through of novel contributions.
This recognition endorses the career of someone who has been part of the protected areas system for more than 23 years; he has served as administrator of the Lomas de Banao ecological reserve and, later, as director of the Base Business Unit that bears the same name. .
Thanks to its landscape values and the actions implemented to conserve its rich biodiversity, Lomas de Banao is one of the most sought after sites by national and foreign clients.
The Citma of Sancti Spiritus also granted Territorial Environmental Recognition to the Topes de Collantes Tourism Complex, the Marlin Trinidad Marina, the Iberostar Grand Trinidad, the Division of the Cuban Telecommunications Company (Etecsa) and the development and innovation unit of the Center of Energy Studies and Industrial Processes at the University of Sancti Spíritus.
Osmel Jiménez Deniz, specialist for Science and Technology in the Territorial Directorate of Etecsa, told ACN that among the entity’s work priorities is everything related to the sustainable management of the environment and, in this sense, also They assume social responsibility with the community.
According to the source, in the last two years the entity shows progress in the state environmental inspection, a topic that evaluated the management of hazardous waste; Meanwhile, it was declared a safe company in its management and has a research, development and innovation project aimed at adapting and mitigating climate change, with which it becomes the only one in the country with an initiative of this nature. .
As part of the celebration, the beach front of the Memories Trinidad del Mar hotel received the status of Environmental Beach after an analysis of indicators related to ecosystem goods and services, the protection of the place located in its area of influence, anti-erosion measures and the work with the vegetation, all of which makes it possible to mitigate the effect of the intensive exploitation to which it is subjected.
Raúl García Baltasar, general director of the facility managed by Cubanacán and marketed by Blue Damond Resort, explained that this recognition is a source of pride after arduous work by the entire group.
According to him, the expectation is that this wonderful edge of the beach, as he described it, will become a Biosphere Reserve and, especially, a place with a commercialization more committed to the preservation of its values and attractions.
