The Colombian National Team thrashed, what do we say thrashed, rather overwhelmed the United States in the penultimate preparation match for the Copa América 2024.

A resounding 5-1 victory showed the superiority of those led by Néstor Lorenzo, with scores from Borré, Arias, Ríos, Carrascal and Sinisterra and very convincing presentations from others such as James, Uribe, Lerma and the center backs Dávinson Sánchez and Lucumí. The team worked like clockwork.

And that good performance maintained a good streak with the Argentine coach on the bench that, if all goes well, should become a record in just a couple of months.

The national team reached 19 games without losing against Colombia, with a balance of 17 wins and 5 draws.

The last time the national team lost in an official match was 1-0 against Argentina, for the Qatar 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, on February 1, 2022, with Reinaldo Rueda as coach. Afterwards, they have been able to emerge victorious in 8 qualifying matches, two in the last administration and 6 on the way to the 2026 World Cup.

In the preparatory matches they have also been able to defend their undefeated record against 17 wins and 5 draws.

The national team has not lost since February 1, 2022 when it was defeated 1-0 by Argentina in the South American Qualifiers for the Qatar World Cup. Since then they have not lost in their 8 qualifying games (2 in the 2022 World Cup and 6 in the 2026 World Cup) or in friendlies against Saudi Arabia (1-0), Guatemala (4-1), Mexico (3-2), Paraguay ( 2-0), United States (0-0), South Korea (2-2), Japan (2-1), Iraq (1-0), Germany (2-0), Venezuela (1-0), Mexico (3-2), Spain (1-0), Romania (3-2) and the United States (5-1).

Maturana, the objective

Now Lorenzo has begun to cross out the games he needs to equal and surpass a record that has been in effect for 30 years, set precisely by the team of Valderrama, Asprilla, Rincón and other legends.

Under the command of Francisco Maturana, that team reached 27 games without defeats, between 1992 and 1994, a mark that until now seemed unattainable.

That cycle would begin on June 31, 1992, with a 1-0 victory against the United States in a friendly game, and would end on April 7, 1994, against Bolivia, another friendly that was played in Villavicencio and ended 2-0.

Now comes a preparation match against Bolivia (this Saturday, June 15) and, if everything goes well and the Colombian National Team reaches the final or at least the match for third place in the Copa América 2024, Lorenzo will have equaled the record .
