The National Administration of Drugs, Foods and Medical Technology (ANMAT) established this Wednesday the prohibition of the production and marketing of a brand of olive oil throughout the national territory and on online sales platforms because it is considered “illegal” due to various irregularities.

According to provision 5224/2024, which was published in the latest edition of the Official Gazette with the signature of the head of that control body, Nélida Agustina Bisio, the product “lacked health records” and was “falsely labeled”.

Specifically, it is the “Chango” brand extra virgin Olive Oil, RNE N° 12000579, RNPA N° 1200612, Chilecito – La Rioja in any presentation, batch and expiration date.

The actions began after a private individual consulted the National Food Institute (INAL), which maintained that the product “would not comply with current food regulations”.

Given this panorama, through the Federal Information System for Food Control Management (SIFeGA), INAL carried out Federal Consultations Nos. 10195 and 10203 addressed to the Food Safety Directorate of the province of La Rioja, in order to obtain data on the records displayed on the product label.

The organization responded that the National Food Product Registry number (RNPA) 1200612 was non-existent and that the National Establishment Registry (RNE) 12000579 corresponded to a licensed establishment, but was not authorized for the production of oils.

Ultimately, it was concluded that “the product was in violation of article 3 of Law No. 18284, article 3 of Annex II of Decree No. 2126/71, articles 6 bis, 13 and 155 of the Argentine Food Code (CAA), for lacking health records and being falsely labeled by stating on the label a non-existent RNPA and an RNE corresponding to an establishment not authorized for the production of the product under investigation, turning out to be an illegal product.

“Because it is a product that cannot be reliably and clearly identified as produced, processed and/or divided in a specific establishment, They cannot be manufactured in any part of the country, nor marketed or sold. in the territory of the Argentine Republic in accordance with the provisions of Article 9, section II of Law No. 18284”, is stated in the recitals.

In this context, the ANMAT made the decision to prohibit the production, fractionation and marketing of the product, as it could not guarantee its traceability, its production conditions, its quality with adequate levels of control under the conditions established by current regulations and its safety. .
