They perform complex kidney tumor surgery at the Villa Clara Pediatric Hospital

For the first time, a multidisciplinary team from the José Luis Miranda Provincial Pediatric Hospital—accompanied by Cecilio González, a second-degree specialist in Angiology at the Ernesto Che Guevara Cardiocenter—performed kidney tumor surgery, with infiltration into the vena cava.

After arriving at the emergency department of the Children’s Hospital, on June 4, with a diagnosis of renal colic, and after several studies, Carol Alicha Águila from Ranchuel became the new milestone of pediatric medicine in the center of Cuba, as she was underwent surgery for a kidney tumor with extension to the vena cava, a procedure performed for the first time in this institution and with complete success.

According to experts, kidney tumors are common in children, but with infiltration into the cava they are rare. In statements by Dr. Abel Armenteros, head of neonatal surgery in the central region and leader of the medical team, it was necessary to act quickly since this tumor in the vena cava endangered his life.

Just four days after Carol Alicha’s surgery, she is progressing satisfactorily. (Belkis Vidal)
