The Foreign Ministry congratulated the European Union after the elections that took place last weekend. “We are certain that the EU and its institutions will know how to respond to the will of European citizens expressed at the polls,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said it is confident that Colombia’s relationship with the European Union, based on common principles and aspirations, will continue to strengthen. “We are also confident that the relationship between Colombia and the European Union will improve through a strategic partnership,” she said. Furthermore, Colombia hopes to continue strengthening ties with the EU within the framework of the next CELAC – European Union Summit, scheduled for 2025.

On the other hand, President Gustavo Petro had already expressed his concern about the results of the recent parliamentary elections, where the extreme right has gained ground in several countries. “The century of lights goes out […] They have not realized the rise of fascism to power. The beacon of democracy is, now, in Latin America,” he said on his X account.

After last Sunday’s elections, the Brussels-based Parliament was marked for the next five years by the advance of the extreme right. This is demonstrated by the victory of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party, Brothers of Italy, and also that of the National Rally in France, which led President Emmanuel Macron to dissolve Parliament and call early elections for the end of this month. Furthermore, German Olaf Scholz’s party suffered a defeat.
