It is recharged with rainwater by more than 3 billion cubic meters per year.

The Cauca Valley has a gigantic reserve of fresh water deep in the earth and it is estimated that it has 44 times more water than the La Salvajina reservoir in Suárez, Cauca.

It is called the Valle Aquifer and has around 40 billion cubic meters of water and, according to the Autonomous Corporation of Valle del Cauca (CVC), it is continuously recharged. “Some of the rainwater runs off and forms streams and rivers, but another part infiltrates and becomes groundwater.”

Likewise, it is said that annually the aquifer is recharged with at least 3,500 million m³ of water.

Water is extracted through wells

Throughout the department, and with reports until 2022, there are at least two thousand wells and the water is used mainly in the agricultural, industrial and livestock sectors, but also for human and domestic use. “The environmental authority ensures that only a part of the water recharge from the rains that infiltrate into the soil is used,” and they also pointed out that only 1,750 million cubic meters of the underground liquid are allowed to be used.

The CVC has promoted the installation of measurement systems in more than 54% of the wells. Studies have shown that the volume extracted is equivalent to 20% of the annual recharge, which allows the department’s environmental authority “deep knowledge of how to take care of this wealth.”
