At least seven Brazilians fugitives from justice and convicted of attempting a coup against Lula began the formal request process at the National Refugee Commission that depends on Migration.

According to what LPO learned, these were 4 men and 3 women who “very well dressed” presented themselves to apply for the status of political refugees because they considered themselves politically persecuted by the Brazilian government.

In a list of almost 100 fugitives who entered the country, Ângelo Sotero, Gilberto Ackermann, Raquel de Souza Lopes, Luiz Fernandes Venâncio, Rosana Maciel Gomes and Daniel Luciano Bressan were the ones who asked to be considered refugees. The convicted persons entered the country between May 21 and August 5.

The list has already been delivered by the Brazilian embassy to the Foreign Ministry, which must respond if these people are indeed those sought by the Brazilian authorities. Sources close to the situation clarify that Argentina does not have a deadline and the process could take longer than necessary.

Likewise, this puts Milei in a very delicate dilemma because he will have to respond to the Brazilian authorities and the Supreme Court of Justice, which has already made the extradition request and at the same time has Bolsonarism demanding protection for the prisoners.

The Court of Brazil demands from Milei the extradition of the Bolsonaro supporters who tried to overthrow Lula

As LPO announced, Eduardo Bolsonaro and four other deputies from the Brazilian right traveled to the country to participate in an event organized by the libertarian María Celeste Ponce. The close relationship between the ruling party and the Brazilian opposition could be a red line that severely damages the bilateral bond.

The convicts investigated for their participation in the taking of Brasilia broke the electronic anklets that they were wearing by order of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), and fled the country to settle in Argentina and Uruguay.

In that sense, Attorney General Paulo Gonet requested the inclusion of red alerts from Interpol so that they could be returned to Brazil and serve their sentence.

The published information maintains that the convicts investigated for their participation in the taking of Brasilia broke the electronic anklets that they were wearing by order of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), and fled the country to settle in Argentina and Uruguay.

Sources from the Brazilian Foreign Ministry told LPO that they have no information because it is classified information from the Argentine government but they are waiting to see what happens.

In parallel, Lula would have decided to avoid a photo with Milei while waiting for the outcome of this possible future crisis. In Lula’s entourage they say “not to rule out anything” and “they hope that diplomacy and common sense prevail.

Bolsonaro wants Milei to asylum six people convicted of the attempted coup against Lula

This situation falls to Milei after the Brazilian government itself extended an important hand to resolve the gas crisis that left a good part of the country without supply. Accepting the request of the Bolsonaro family could be a red line from which he could not go back.

Brazil expects the same from Argentina as it does from Uruguay and Paraguay (the other two countries that would have fugitives in this same case). As LPO announced, last week, during the visit of the Brazilian Minister of Justice to Asunción, Ricardo Lewandowski, Brazil and Paraguay reaffirmed their collaboration commitments, including the extradition of people wanted by the judicial authorities, so it is not ruled out that this situation has been on the agenda.
