As of April 2024, in Santa Marta there has been a 33% increase in road accidents, compared to the same period of time in 2023.

During this Saturday afternoon, the National Road Safety Agency (ANSV), and the District transportation sector, were launching the Comprehensive Plan for Vacations and School Recess, within the framework of the campaign “On the road, together we take care of the life”.

This strategy will be executed between June 17 and until July 7, 2024, during which time pedagogical, surveillance and control measures will be taken to comply with traffic regulations and prevent road accidents.

According to the National Road Safety Observatory, during the 2023 mid-year holiday season, 488 people lost their lives in road accidents.

The city of Santa Marta was prioritized in 2024. In 2023, 115 people died in road accidents in the city. 64% of those killed in road accidents in 2023 were motorcyclists. Currently, of the 48 people who have died in road accidents this 2024, 31 have been motorcyclists.

According to the data, as of April 2024, in Santa Marta there has been a 33% increase in road accidents, compared to the same period of time in 2023.

Luis Yair Aguilar, director of the Institutional Coordination of the ANSV, in an interview with OPINIÓN CARIBE, pointed out that this is a strategy that seeks to raise awareness among the different road actors that travel through the road corridors in order to reduce accident rates.

«In Santa Marta so far this year we have already had 48 deaths, where motorcyclists continue to be the most vulnerable, that is why the Agency has the Motodestrezas strategy that seeks to raise awareness among motorcyclists about compliance with traffic rules and the proper use of personal protection elements,” he said.

Finally, he extended an invitation to all drivers who will be traveling along the country’s main roads this holiday season.

“The Agency’s invitation is very precise, it is to be able to comply with traffic regulations, not drive with excess speed or while intoxicated, always respect traffic regulations and take active breaks to have a safe trip,” he concluded.
