Curly- Luis Gallego is a Technology teacher at School No. 70 San José. Married to Mariana, also a teacher, his children are Mateo (10) and Francisco (6), who are in fifth and first grade of primary school. The peculiarity is that Luis, in addition to being a father, teaches them both. On this special weekend when Father’s Day is celebrated, we choose his story to greet and recognize all those who fulfill the most beautiful and important function.
“I am a high school technical school graduate and I have been teaching for 16 years. I always worked in secondary education and even higher education at some point, but with primary school, at Escuela 70 I started in 2021, right after the pandemic, when Mateo was already in second grade. I couldn’t quite decide, I understood that it was an enormous challenge to work with the little ones and even more so to teach a child.”
He added that “I thought about it a lot, we talked about it as a family before making the decision. Luckily everything turned out well, it was more of a scare than what really happened. I was prepared and I always had clear roles. It’s not easy, but is not impossible either. In the classroom I am the teacher, I provide myself to the students and my son is just another student, with the right and duty to study and learn. My son does not escape that, he has to complete homework and practical work. And the same thing happens to me now with Francisco, in first grade. They have to comply and learn, that is the goal. We talked about it previously, I told them that dad would be in the classroom, that I still am, but that in the classroom I am a teacher and they must comply as if they were with any other teacher. Neither I nor they have to make differences. They have to learn from other teachers and they have to learn with me,” he said.
