“Since its founding, on June 16, 1959, as an initiative of the eternal commander Fidel Castro and Che Guevara together with the journalist Jorge Ricardo Masetti, who was joined by other figures identified with the causes of oppressed peoples, Prensa Latina has marked a certain course,” said Juan Carlos Camaño, president of Felap.
For his part, the secretary general of the hemispheric organization, Nelson del Castillo, established that since its birth the Latin American Information Agency has had to face many attempts to silence it, “which neither the enemies of the truth nor those who have used terrorism for such purposes.”
Currently, Felap leaders indicated, Prensa Latina has reached an extraordinary dimension under the presidency of journalist Luis Enrique González, who managed to place it in a framework of modernity.
“We take this opportunity to, through you, send our congratulations to those who currently continue the inspiring work of other journalists and press workers who have, in the past, under adverse conditions, known how to defeat the enemies of journalism committed to true,” they stressed.
Felap, which is also celebrating by ratifying the principles that gave rise to it 48 years ago of “free journalism in free homelands,” does not hide its joy at the strength that Prensa Latina maintains 65 years after its birth.
