The alliances with which Avianca expands its dominance in Colombia and the world

In February, when it became known that the Civil Aeronautics had authorized Emirates, the giant Arab airline, to begin flying in Colombia as of June, there was talk of a possible rivalry with Avianca, the largest airline in the country in terms of routes and passengers mobilized. This is because they were going to compete on a route that is particularly important for them, the Bogotá – Miami, which is part of the connection that the new players are going to offer to Dubai.

Avianca delegates even said that the arrival of the Arabs was going to be a problem for the national airline industry, but, four months later and without a possible reversal for the landing of Emirates, which has already begun flying Colombian skies from On June 3, differences were smoothed over and an agreement was even reached that will be beneficial for both parties.

It was learned that the company led by the Portuguese Frederico Pedreira and which belongs to the large holding company Grupo Abra reached a code-sharing agreement with the one from the United Arab Emirates, that is, from now on they will share some routes for which both will sell seats for the same flights.

These routes will be Madrid – Bogotá, Madrid – Cali, Madrid – Medellín and Barcelona – Bogotá, which will be flown on Avianca planes, but which will be accessible to Emirates and Barcelona – Dubai, Madrid – Dubai and London – Dubai customers, for which will be the opposite case.

The other 17 airlines allied with Avianca

Before Emirates, Avianca already had shared codes with 17 airlines, most of which belonged to the 26 that make up Star Alliance. Such is the case of United Airlines, Air China, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Azul Linhas Aéreas and All Nippon Airways, among others.

Three particular cases stand out, that of Clic, the only Colombian company with which they are allied and that allows its passengers to reach destinations such as Puerto Asís, Florencia, Quibdó or Arauca; that of the Brazilian Gol, which was the one with which he partnered to create the Abra Group and that of the also Brazilian Azul, which may change his plans in the future if he ends up staying with Gol.
