MSMEs boost purchases. Data from this week, released by the Cerveceros de España employers’ association, in the Iberian country, revealed that Cuba is the second country that buys the most Spanish beer in the world, only behind Portugal.
According to local press reports, in 2023, Cuba will be positioned as the second largest destination for Spanish beer exports, surpassing the United Kingdom and France for the first time. The Caribbean island received 20% of the Spanish beer exported, ranking only behind Portugal, which accounted for 22%.
“The rise of Cuba as the second destination for Spanish beer exports is due to a combination of factors,” he told the outlet. The Independent Jacobo Olalla Marañón, general manager of the employer’s association.
“There is greater commercial openness in Cuba after the flexibility of imports, which since 2020 has allowed the import of beer and other various goods (…) the growth of tourism in Cuba has boosted the demand for beer in a country with a strong presence of Spanish hotel companies,” he added, referring first to MSMEs and then to hotels of the Iberian brand Meliá or Iberostar.
MSMEs promote purchases of Spanish beer in Cuba
It is no coincidence that between 2021 and 2023, with the rise and growth of MSMEs in Cuba, the purchase of Spanish beer has skyrocketed, exceeding 800,000 hectoliters. The shortage in Cuba is not only food, it also includes drinks.
If it is a matter of numbers, in 2021, exports to Cuba grew by 62%, in 2022, they skyrocketed another 196% and in 2023, the trend continued with an increase of 193%. This consolidates Spain as an international benchmark in the beer industry and is located only behind Germany, as the country that produces the most this liquid.
Spanish beer in Cuban MSMEs can sell for around 170 or 180 Cuban pesos, while in the state’s MLC stores, a box of 24 cans of Estrella Galicia costs 22.50 USD. At the Hiperdino market, which is from the Canary Islands, a box costs one dollar more, around 23 dollars.
