“On June 16, 1959, a fight began to break the information monopoly,” stated the political group in reference to the birth in Havana, Cuba, of this press agency.

Its creators, including commanders Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara, conceived the idea and organized a medium that would bring information to the people of Latin America, underlining the historical strength of the left in this nation.

This – he disclosed in a statement – as an alternative to the large international cable news agencies of those times.

It was the first Latin American communication project of international scope with an alternative vision of the regional reality, the central axis of its coverage to this day, highlighted the URNG.

He also highlighted “that this important agency emerged a few days after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, in the midst of the celebration of a massive press conference called Operation Truth, which brought together hundreds of journalists from various countries around the world.”

He noted that currently in the world the big machines, the big communication monopolies, use the most aggressive methods of propaganda and mass manipulation, with bigger and better technologies to spread fake news.

When they act as a powerful weapon to misinform, distort the truth, create destabilization and alienation in our people; Prensa Latina is, as since its beginnings, the voice of the voiceless, the Guatemalan party emphasized.

In the text he described the Latin American Information Agency as an international journalism school, with the commitment to also contribute to ensuring that we do not become victims of lies.

On this new anniversary, the URNG greeted and evoked the founders of the agency, such as Juan Marrero, journalists, photographers, reporters, photojournalists, designers, editors, translators, technicians, professionals of all specialties.

Likewise, to all those who, with modesty and multiple difficulties, maintain the presence of Prensa Latina, its spirit of struggle and combat with which it was born 65 years ago.

The group joined the revolutionary and progressive forces of Latin America, the Caribbean and the rest of the world, to the struggle of Prensa Latina, in the permanent defense of the Cuban Revolution.

To spread its Latin American, internationalist vocation and to permanently demand the end of the blockade imposed by North American imperialism and that Cuba be immediately removed from the list of countries that promote terrorism, URNG also urged.
