In an emotional visit to the municipality of Aracataca, the secretary general of the Andean Parliament, Dr. Eduardo Chiliquinga Mazón, in his capacity as head of diplomatic mission accredited to the government of Colombia, highlighted the profound use of the legacy of the famous writer in his homeland . “For a member of the Andean Parliament, being in the land of Gabriel García Márquez, in ‘Macondo’, is to be charged with the energy of the great Nobel, to continue working for peace,” said Chiliquinga Mazón.

During his tour of the emblematic municipality, and emblematic places such as the Gabriel García Márquez House Museum, the Telegrapher’s House and the Railway Station, the general secretary highlighted that the legacy of the author of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” transcends borders, already belonging not only to the cataqueros, but to the entire world.

In his speech, Chiliquinga Mazón reflected on the connection between García Márquez’s magical realism and the identity of the Andean region. “I feel that dreams, butterflies, are not only part of the Magical Realism of Aracataca, but also mark the identity of the Andean region,” she expressed. In addition, she called on the authorities to transform those dreams into public works, efficient services, education for children and health for all people, highlighting the validity of the dreams embodied by García Márquez.

The authority of the Andean Parliament also highlighted the historical and cultural importance of Aracataca by comparing the writer from Aracataca with figures such as Simón Bolívar, highlighting the universality of the Colombian author. “I think that Gabo not only belongs to Cataca and Colombia, but to the Andean region, because butterflies take flight to search for the horizon, and the Andean condor takes flight to search for dreams,” he indicated.

It is important to mention that, during the visit, he was accompanied by Ibeth Noriega, Director of Cultural Projection of the University of Magdalena, who highlighted the importance of strengthening the cultural offer of the municipality. Noriega expressed his satisfaction with the visit of the Andean official and highlighted the strategic alliances that are being built to offer enriching cultural experiences to visitors.

Noriega stressed the importance of public-private alliances for the cultural and tourism development of Aracataca, highlighting the crucial role of institutions such as the University of Magdalena and the Magdalena Family Compensation Fund (Cajamag). «We do nothing by working independently or autonomously. For this reason, I think that here in Aracataca important alliances have been built that need to be strengthened every day for the progress of the municipality and the consolidation of the Cataquera culture itself,” he stated.
