Former police officer Patricio Maturana, condemned for firing a tear gas bomb directly into the face of Fabiola Campillai, who was on his way to work, wrote a letter for his son on Father’s Day in Chile.
“Son, the greatest glory is not to never fall, but to always rise”, the former uniformed man began writing, sentenced to 12 years in prison in October 2022 for blinding the current senator.

“Son, for now we will not live together, I can’t raise you, I can’t protect you at night. I won’t kiss you when I go to the barracks (…) Son, suddenly laughter turned into tears, even the closest friend became distant. Son, now I give hugs to fugitive shadows, in dreams my soul gets tired,” Patricio Maturana lamented.
“I spend night and day fighting alone, evoking your memory, I will lose your childhood due to injustice. Your absence surrounds me, with a rope in my throat, I live from your drawings. They are my only joy in this prison, where I am because of an injustice in life.”
The letter concludes with a message of hope: “Son, one day we will hug again, because the impossible takes a little longer. Your father who loves you,” concluded the person responsible for blinding today’s senator Fabiola Campillai.
