By Lazaro Fariñas*/Photo Virgilio Ponce -Martianos.- [email protected] EFE).- Sales of goods and services by small and medium-sized private companies in Cuba triple. COMMENTS FROM MIAMI. TWO DIFFERENT CUBAS.

Many friends of Cuba tell me here that the economic situation of Cubans is now worse than in the so-called “Special Period.” I disagree with those who say it here in Miami, as well as with those who say it and who live there. During the nineties I went to Cuba every two or three months and spent several days there. At that time I did not stay in hotels but in a family house that is located in front of the Copacabana in Miramar, or in my house in Báez, my town in Villa Clara. Now I go once or twice a year and I can assure you that this time is not even remotely similar to that one. Almost nothing was found in the EP, not even dollars. That was the time of the Escambray Plan: It’s your turn, but there isn’t any. Now there is, but many are living in the Camarioca Plan: There is, but it’s not your turn.

With money, nowadays you can find everything on the island, anything you need can be found there. It is true that Cuban society in the nineties was egalitarian, today this is not the case. Today there is a fairly large portion of the population that has economic resources to cope day after day. Today there are many who are high up, but there are others who are, as we would say in good Cuban, eating a cable.

The truth is that, despite the regrets, I prefer the Cuba of today to the Cuba of the nineties…
