I would like to tell you very clearly that with borders is not something that can be ambiguous and is a basic principle of respect between countries and that, therefore, They must remove those solar panels as soon as possible or we are going to do it“said Gabriel Boric before the Chilean press. He also commented that he discussed the incident with the Argentine president.

Boric: “They must remove those panels or we will do it”

The Chilean president’s words were very clear. Both countries have already declared that they do not intend to escalate the incident but keep it on the normal lines of the bilateral relationship. But there is a message that should not be well understood: Borders are to be respected.

Boricupon returning to Santiago de Chile, was immediately consulted about this episode and declared: “We learned some time ago that Argentina, by installing a military base in the region of the Patagonia installed some solar panels in Chilean territory. “We received an apology from the Argentine Foreign Ministry.”he explained.

He then precisely defined his government’s position: I would like to tell you very clearly that with borders it is not something with which one can have ambiguities and that it is a basic principle of respect between countries and that therefore They must remove those solar panels as soon as possible or we are going to do it.”

The trans-Andean president said that he had already discussed the problem with his counterpart Javier Milei. Therefore, it is logical to infer that they will have discussed this topic while they were both in Swiss, participating in the Peace Summit, with Ukraine as a center.

When to remove solar panels

The Chilean Foreign Minister said – as Boric confirmed – that Argentina expressed an apology for this case. But Chile wants the solar panels to be removed from the place where they are located. The trans-Andean country says that they are at milestone Number 1 on the Argentine border. The site is in Cabo del Espíritu Santo, at the northern tip of Tierra del Fuego, where the border of both countries converges.

The problem is that Chile denounced that the solar panels, to provide energy to the border post of our country, were located about 3 kilometers within its territory.

At the level of foreign ministries there is already an understanding to solve the issue and Argentina admitted the error of installing them three kilometers within Chilean territory.. However, the problem now arises as to when, in fact, the panels will be dismantled.

The Argentine ambassador in Santiago, Jorge Faurie, said that at this time of year it is impossible to do so due to the bad weather conditions on the verge of the beginning of winter. The most appropriate time, according to the former Argentine foreign minister, would be when good weather conditions return, that is, in summer.

For the Chilean government, it is too long a period to wait. Solar panels must be removed first.
