According to a report by Ultracine published in May of this year, Argentine movie theaters experienced a first half of 2024 with discouraging numbers: ticket sales in May marked a drop of 56% compared to the same month of 2023 and were ranked as the worst performance since 2001.

Despite the general trend, some premieres managed to stand out. Planet of the Apes: New Kingdom became the second most viewed film in the saga in Argentina last month, with 781,256 tickets sold. Regarding Argentine cinema, the highest-grossing national film was Germany, with 12,152 tickets sold.

According to the Cines Argentinos ranking, the most successful premiere of the year was Barbie (January 2024), with a total of 1,800,000 spectators.

Ezequiel Boetti, a journalist specialized in culture and entertainment, analyzed in dialogue with the National University of Moreno: “This year, unlike the previous one, there were no large productions that attracted the public to the theaters en masse. So it is a combination of two things: on the one hand, the offering of the billboard in a context where fewer and fewer titles attract more viewers, and on the other, how expensive it is to go to the cinema nowadays. In some complexes, today the tickets are on average $8,000 or so. Although there are promotions and discounts, in this context it is an important figure.”

How do streaming platforms influence?

According to the National Survey of Cultural Consumption, which was carried out from 2013 to 2023 to know the habits, consumption and preferences of Argentines, 65% of the participants responded that they use audiovisual platforms to watch series and movies. From 2017 to year 2022, this figure increased by 24%.

Moving on to this year, we have the report from Sherlock Communications, which surveyed 3,372 people in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru as part of a study on streaming consumption in Latin America.

According to the data they released, this positive trend for streaming platforms suffered some setbacks due to economic circumstances; six out of ten Argentines consider that it has become “very expensive” to pay more than one subscription to these platforms, and 34% unsubscribed from a subscription during the last year due to the price increase.

Among those who chose to keep their subscription on just one platform, the most popular were Netflix and Max (formerly HBO Max). Another no less detail that this report took into account is the issue of attention; While the cinema offers an experience where we dedicate 100% of our attention to the film, 70% of Argentines stated that they carry out other activities while playing movies or series on streaming platforms.

Future outlook

“What streaming does is change the location of cinema in the audiovisual ecosystem. But it is committed to maintaining the experience of going to the movies. That is why family, superhero and horror franchise films are the highest grossing in recent years. They want to exploit the greatest amount of resources and audiovisual displays to ‘make use’ of the big screen,” Boetti added in his analysis with the National University of Moreno.

On Thursday, June 13, Intensely 2 premiered in Argentina, one of these family films that has great potential to alter ticket sales numbers. Next week, Despicable Me 4 will also be released along these lines.

According to Cines Argentinos, the most anticipated upcoming releases are Alien: Romulus (08/15/24), Mission Impossible 8 (05/22%2025) and Captain America: Brave new world (02/13/2025).
