Indigenous leaders arrived in Lima to ask for assistance due to cases of child sexual abuse reported in Condorcanqui

The Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations, Teresa Hernández, held a meeting with Awajun leadersincluding the apu Romer Orrego and the president of the regional organization of indigenous peoples, Raquel Caicat. These leaders traveled to Lima to seek help against the cases of sexual violence that have been reported in the province of Condorcanquiin the Amazon region, for more than ten years.

The leaders have requested to establish a coordinated collaboration between the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP) and indigenous communities, with the purpose of applying effective sanctions against any form of sexual violence that affects minors in Condorcanqui.

Minister Hernández declared: «We are attending to their demands and will call an urgent meeting of the High Level Multisectoral Commission (CMAN)made up of various sectors, to implement immediate measures aimed at preventing and eradicating cases of violence.

Apu Orrego expressed: «It is not easy to access ministers. I will transmit this gesture to my Awajún community. We ask the MIMP to help us promote modifications to our statutes and internal regulations in order to effectively punish cases of sexual violence. “All communities are united in this.”

He indicated that in the Amazonas region, specifically in the UGEL Condorcanqui, 116 teachers and administrative staff accused of sexual crimes have been removeds of their positions.

“We express our deep dismay at the carelessness with which these cases have been handled since 2010. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the protection of the rights of children. From the Ministry of Education, we commit to persevere until we achieve justice and apply necessary corrective measures, since the safety and well-being of our minors is our main priority,” he communicated through an official statement.
