These days, Italian cinema resumes the prevalence it had decades ago on the screens of our country, with the celebration starting this Wednesday in the capital’s theaters of the third edition of the Orizzonti Italia-Cuba Festival, which will run until next Sunday.

This was revealed in a press conference held recently at the ICAIC headquarters, in which Guglielmo Pirroni, Counselor of the Italian Embassy in Havana, participated; Antonio Urrata, director of Orizzonti and Luciano Castillo, director of the Cuban Cinematheque, among others.

Faithful to the purpose of internationalizing the cultural and artistic heritage of the European nation, the event presents a program that includes both classic films, to be shown at the 23 and 12 cinemas, as well as recent productions that will be based in Acapulco, according to He met.

In the selection of films that are already part of the history of Italian cinema, those in which four greats of the seventh art participated were privileged: Marcelo Mastroianni, on his centenary; Vittorio de Sicca, half a century after his physical disappearance; Sofía Loren, whose birth marks the 96th anniversary in 2024, and Mónica Vitti, who died recently.

In this way, the public will be able to enjoy at Cinema 23 and 12 the restored copies of five films in which Mastroianni acted, three of them directed by De Sicca: “Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” (1963), “Marriage Italian Style ” (1964) and “The Sunflowers” (1970). Regarding contemporary cinema, the proposal brought to this edition of the Festival is made up of the films “Felicidad” (2023), by Micaela Ramazzotti; “I can enter? An Ode to Naples” (2023), by Trudie Styler and “My Hair Hurts” (2023), by Roberta Torre. This segment also includes the fiction feature film “The Best of You” (2023), by Fabrizio María Cortese, present at the press conference along with actor Vincent Riotta.

The film, whose plot is based on the filmmaker’s own experiences, regarding the importance of forgiveness among human beings, was selected to open the Acapulco billboard this Wednesday. According to the program of the edition of the event, Cortese and Riotta will offer a master class next Thursday at 2:00 PM in the Héctor García Mesa room, where the meeting with reporters took place. In his speech, the Italian diplomat thanked the support received by this institution and the Cuban Cinematheque for the holding of the Festival, while expressing his hope that “this important initiative can not only promote Italian cinema, but also create opportunities and ties for future collaborations in the cinematographic field between our countries.

The occasion was opportune for the presentation of the book “Ítalo Calvino. Undoing Literature” which, conceived to commemorate the centenary of the prominent intellectual in 2023, was published by Ediciones Magale, with the collaboration of numerous Italian and Cuban institutions. When introducing the text, Dr. Mayerín Bello, a prominent scholar of Calvino’s work, praised the quality of the essays that appear in it about the writer’s work, as well as the visual beauty of the volume, based on the photographs and Posters included.
