Next, we will tell you how to get to this hidden corner, following the blog’s recommendations “Read about the Journey.”

How to get to Chorro del Ucumar

By vehicle: Enter “Acceso Serranías de Zapla” in Google Maps or your GPS and follow the directions to the sign. The road, although gravel, is generally in good condition for low cars, motorcycles, trucks and bicycles. However, during the rainy season it can become difficult for low cars.

By public transport: Take the General Savio Company bus to San Pedro. This leaves at different times: 08:00 am from the Old Terminal, 08:30 am from the New Terminal, and 08:45 am from Palpalá. You have to keep in mind that it goes through La Mendieta. From there, you have to walk about 4 hours.

trekking

From the sign shown on the blog, a 3-kilometer trek begins to Chorro del Ucumar. This section can be done on foot, although if you arrived by motorcycle or bicycle, you can continue a little further. The first part of the trail ascends about 350 meters, and although it is a little strenuous, the views more than make up for it.

During the tour, you have to take a detour to the left, where the trail becomes more beautiful but also more challenging. The vegetation is lush and, in summer, the humidity can make the ground slippery. It is recommended to walk carefully, using your hands for support when necessary and enjoying the stunning natural surroundings.

Practical tips

  • Caution on descent: The last part of the path, before reaching Chorro del Ucumar, can be dangerous without due caution. It is advisable to carry a climbing rope to tie to a tree to facilitate the descent and ascent in the most slippery areas.
  • Free access: There is no entrance fee for either Cerro Zapla or Chorro del Ucumar.
  • Group visit: Although it is not mandatory to bring a guide, it is essential not to venture alone. Go in a group and check weather conditions before you head out. Wear good mountain shoes and appropriate equipment.
  • Time of the year: You can visit it all year round, but in the dry months (May to November) the Chorro del Ucumar might not have water.

Important

  • Responsibility and care: Nature is for everyone, but it is crucial to be responsible. Evaluate your physical capabilities, weather conditions and the state of the roads. Don’t venture out without the right knowledge, experience, company and equipment.
  • Do not leave garbage: Take with you everything you brought. Garbage deteriorates nature and affects the experience of other visitors.

Jujuy offers countless beautiful places to explore. It is our responsibility to take care of them and take care of ourselves to continue enjoying these wonderful landscapes.
