During the day of Wednesday, June 19, the Regional Chess Championship was held in the premises of the Illustrious Municipality of Calama, which resulted in the victory of María Belén Carvajal, student and flagship chess player of the D-48 Presidente Balmaceda School, against opponents from schools throughout the region.

In this way, María Belén is crowned once again as regional champion, representing and leaving Calama at the top in science sports. It should be remembered that previously the chess player was champion in the Comdes communal tournament and the Fide – Comdes communal tournament, winning in each of the instances. In turn, during May, María Belén achieved the maximum victory in the National Chess Championship, where she was crowned first place in the sub-14 category, in front of skilled students from all over the country.
Ingrid Carrasco, analyst of the IND school sports games, said that “In the last two years, Calama has classified athletes for the national stage, last year they were also classified and this year a male athlete would be attending with a lady and the technical staff will be from Calama. The national will be on October 22 in the Metropolitan Region”.
