The German team tied 1-1 against Switzerland this Sunday with a goal in injury time and took first place in Group A of the Euro Cup. In the other match in the area, Hungary won against Scotland at the last minute and maintained their chances of advancing to the round of 16.
In the match that was played at the Deutsche Bank Park in the city of Frankfurt, Switzerland started with an advantage thanks to a goal from Dan Ndoye in the 28th minute. The Swiss maintained the advantage until the end of the match and it seemed that they were going to take first place from the tournament organizers and one of the top candidates, but Niclas Fullkrug managed to tie with a header in the 92nd minute and give the leadership of the area to Germany.
Germany finished first in its group thanks to victories against Scotland (5-1) and Hungary (2-0). Their opponent in the round of 16 will be the team that finishes second in Group C, made up of England, Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia.
On the other hand, Switzerland secured second place as a result of the previous victory against Hungary (3-1) and the draw with Scotland (1-1). In the next instance they will face the second in Group B, which could be Italy, Albania or Croatia.
In the other Group A match, which was played at the Mercedes Benz Arena in Stuttgart, Hungary beat Scotland with a goal from Kevin Csoboth in the last play, to add the first three points and remain in an expectant position.
Now, the Hungarians will have to wait for a series of results to be among the four best third parties and advance to the round of 16 for the first time since the 2016 edition.
In this match, a chilling image occurred when the Hungarian striker Barnabás Varga suffered a very hard collision with the Scottish goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, and had to be covered by players from both teams while he was treated by doctors on the field of play. Fortunately, the Hungarian Football Federation reported that he is “stable” in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart.
The action in the Euro Cup will continue this Monday with Spain-Albania and Croatia-Italy, corresponding to Group B.
