In Cauca, violence once again shakes the department. In Jambaló, a peace signer was murdered along with another community member.

According to what was reported by the Institute of Development and Peace Studies (Indepaz), the crime occurred in the Barandillo village when the peace signatory Jhon Edison Ipia was leaving a meeting of the Agency for Reincorporation and Normalization (ARN) and a traditional community festival.

“The two bodies were found, one of them that of a peace signer and the other apparently that of a collaborator of an armed group. The accurate version is unknown because the bodies were removed by an illegal structure to prevent inspections from being carried out,” said senior indigenous councilor Yesid Conda.

According to Indepaz, the demobilized man was murdered in the early hours of June 21, when heavily armed men broke into his home and shot him repeatedly.

Ipia carried out his reintegration process into civilian life in the Carlos Perdomo Territorial Training and Reincorporation Space (Etcr) in the Los Monos village, in the municipality of Caldono in Cauca.

With this crime, there are already 13 signatories murdered in the country so far this year. In Cauca, there are four.

The ‘Dagoberto Ramos’ front of the Western Bloc of the Central General Staff of the FARC and ELN dissidents is present in the area. However, those responsible and the motives for the crime are yet to be established.

They capture the alleged person responsible for a prominent indigenous leader

The First Mobile Municipal Criminal Court with Guarantees Control functions of Popayán ordered the preventive detention in a prison facility for alias ‘Soldado’, 39 years old, investigated for his alleged participation in the murder of the renowned leader of the Association of Indigenous Councils of the North of Cauca (Acin), Miller Correa.

The events that led to his capture occurred on March 14, 2022 in the Las Chozas de Popayán village, where the insured person today attacked Correa with a firearm.

According to the investigations, alias ‘Soldado’ would be the commission leader of the Carlos Patiño Residual Organized Armed Group and in his judicial record, there would be several notes for the commission of different crimes, among which the alleged homicide of the indigenous leader stands out.

“After two years of the murder of Thu’thenas José Miller Correa; With soldier aliases, there are three people who have so far been arrested for this serious incident, the first two accused of concealing and receiving the vehicle in which the Thu’thenas was traveling. However, to date, those directly responsible for the murder, the material and intellectual authors, have not yet been identified, nor have the motives been clarified,” Acin said in a statement.

Among other crimes that he is accused of, are aggravated homicide, manufacturing, trafficking and carrying of firearms or ammunition, aggravated and qualified and aggravated robbery.
