Orange alert issued in Santa Marta due to possible sudden flooding in the rivers

The Mayor’s Office of Santa Marta, through the Office for Risk Management and Climate Change (Ogricc), announced an orange alert due to the probability of sudden flooding in the rivers.

The Ogricc explained that the alert falls especially on the basins of the Guachaca, Mendihuaca, Buritaca, Minca rivers, among others direct to the Caribbean. The increases would be associated with the appearance of new rainfall that, according to forecasts, will fall on this capital.

In this sense, the institution has asked the Samaria community to take into account a series of basic recommendations to reduce disaster risks. “It is important that citizens comply with the recommendations to avoid any situation that endangers life, as well as we invite you to inform the emergency lines about any eventuality,” said Alex Velázquez, head of the Ogricc.

If your home is located on the water line:

– Permanently monitor the level of rivers or streams.

-If an overflow occurs and water enters the home, the floor creaks or an erosive process worsens on the ground that supports it, please evacuate.

-If you notice pronounced cracks in the walls, or a partial collapse of the property occurs, please leave the building.
