In his profile on the social network X, the foreign minister stated that these provisions are aimed at continuing to strengthen the unity of Cubans, based on the current migratory phenomena that are highly complex.

Such projects are currently being analyzed with the deputies of the National Assembly of People’s Power (Parliament), prior to their presentation at the Third Ordinary Session of that body, to be held next July.

Among other measures, they eliminate the limit of 24 months as the length of stay authorized to remain abroad, so that no Cuban citizen, declared resident abroad, will lose their rights in the country.

According to the head of the Directorate of Identification, Immigration and Immigration (DIIE), First Colonel Mario Méndez, these provisions stop the increase in the status of emigrants – held by those who left the country before 2013.

Likewise, he announced that a care system will be organized gradually for those who wish to change their status and qualify for the category of resident abroad.

No one loses their home, car or other property for being a resident abroad. There is no reference in the bills against this, in this regard, he said.

Cuba enacted the Migration Law in 1972, the regulations of which were published in 1978 and were one of the most relevant changes regarding this policy in the country.

Four decades later, in 2012, an updating process began through several decrees, prior to several modifications introduced in 2015, 2017 and 2019.
