New secondary school: meetings begin to implement it

Within the framework of the implementation of the “New Secondary Academic Regime” that eliminates repetition and that during the second stage of the year will begin to be applied through a transition, the Undersecretariat of Education, the Provincial Directorate of Secondary Education and the Directorate of Education of Private Management (DIEGEP) organized a series of work meetings in La Plata with inspectors, regional and district heads to begin fine-tuning the agenda and developing the roadmap for the implementation of the modifications.

From the Buenos Aires educational portfolio they explained that these meetings were already held in Mar del Plata, at the beginning of the week, and that yesterday and Wednesday they took place in the City, in order to convene the closest districts.

“There will be territorial work sessions with the management teams in all districts because this change requires a lot of preparation, communication and transmission work, since the academic regime must be achieved in consensus in the entire educational community, from teachers to families, including students and tutors. There are many aspects to work on,” said Pablo Urquiza, deputy general director of Education and Culture of Buenos Aires.

In this regard, they highlighted that the new regime was approved unanimously “and that is a first good message, in that there is agreement that secondary school must be transformed in several aspects. These are processes that will occur simultaneously from the second half of the year. We are doing it by listening a lot because that is showing us the best ways of implementation.”

The work sessions were held at the María Auxiliadora School, a Don Bosco Foundation in the City. In addition, the General Council of Culture and Education of the Province of Buenos Aires participated in both meetings, where the “Management Guidelines 2024-2027 and Update of the Academic Regime (RA)” were presented and the main axes of the RA were presented and work was done on the implementation from the territorial perspective through group work.

At the first working table, training and support actions for the implementation of the RA were proposed. During the afternoon, there were work spaces between the attendees for the planning of the implementation of the changes of the RA and a sharing of what was discussed in those two days.

The Secondary Education Department of Buenos Aires stressed that the new system will be similar to the university system: the project to end grade repetition in secondary schools seeks to establish a model “more similar to the university model”, although with “accompanied demands”.

All the reforms will be applied in 2025, but after the winter holidays of 2024 they will begin to work in secondary schools with a mix: what there is at the moment and what is coming for next year.

The Undersecretary of Education, Pablo Urquiza, was in charge of the conference presentation table; the provincial director of Secondary Education, Gustavo Galli; the 1st vice president of the General Council of Education, Mariana Galarza; and the general advisor, teacher representative, Néstor Carasa.

The opening of yesterday’s event was carried out by the general director of Culture and Education of Buenos Aires, Alberto Sileoni; also, the director of General Inspection, Silvio Maffeo; the deputy director Adriana Juárez; and the deputy director of Institutional Management of the Secondary Level, Karina Prandi.
