This year the Civil Registry announced important progress in terms of improving its products and the services provided by the state agency, since Both the passport and the identity card can be obtained digitally.
The digitization of the passport and identity card will allow Chileans have these documents on their cell phones and will have similar uses to the physical card, but will not be a replacement for this document.

In order to access the new identity card and digital passport, the Civil Registry will make available an application in which the document can be obtained. This application will be available for mobile devices. Android and iOS.
When will it be possible to apply for a digital ID card?
People who wish to obtain their identity card digitally will be able to do so from December 16, 2024.
“Whoever renews from December 16 onwards will be able to obtain a digital identity card and digital passport. You will have the functionality on your cell phone from a special app“This will allow us to ensure through proof of life that the person is who they say they are,” explained the director of the Civil Registry, Omar Morales.

It is important to keep in mind that it is not mandatory to obtain this digital identity card, since the physical document will not be replaced. What’s more, it is a complement to plastic and can be used for procedures such as identity checks, access to stadiums, online purchase of medicines, telemedicine and more.
Also, on this same date, that is, December 16 of this year, the Civil Registry will have available the New identity card and passport documentswhich will have a new appearance and improvements in terms of security.
THE LAST
The current identity card will remain valid until the expiration date that appears on the document and It is not mandatory to get a new one first.
For example, if your card expires on June 10, 2030, this will remain in force until that date and it will not be necessary to renew it before then.
