The initiative seeks to support fishing management and add value to the community’s cove.

During the most important festival of artisanal fishing, the fourth delivery of the region was held this Saturday, June 29, in Puerto Chacabuco, which will be administered by the artisanal fishermen themselves.

In the ceremony, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) handed over a Use Agreement of the Allocation of the Maritime Destination to the Union of Independent Workers of Artisanal Fishermen Bahía Chacabuco, which makes this space of the commune of Aysén in a new pole of economic development.

This initiative seeks not only to involve the community, but also to support fisheries management and add value to this cove that currently lands sea silversides, sea bass, southern sardines, crabs, marble crabs and sea urchins.

The management of the cove will provide them with the opportunity to diversify their economic activity and develop new initiatives beyond fishing and the extraction of resources from the sea, such as the implementation and management of a beach space, beach land and portion of water, for the use of the artisanal vessels of the Union and the fishing community of Puerto Chacabuco, in addition to the creation of infrastructure to support artisanal fishing, services and tourism activities.

The president of the Independent Workers Union of Artisanal Fishermen of Bahía Chacabuco, Raúl Álvarez, referred to this important milestone for the cove.

“Making this delivery happen is super important, since we can project ourselves in the field of fishing, be able to sell fresh fish, we have a lot of projects to do here. We thank Felipe Fondesa from Sernapesca who always helped us and accompanied us in this process,” he noted.

Finally, the acting regional director of Sernapesca, Jorge Padilla, highlighted the perseverance and work of all the fishermen.

“Today, a dream for all the fishermen of Caleta Puerto Chacabuco comes true, and it is very important for us to be able to complete this delivery so that the Union can advance in the economic development of its space. In addition, coinciding with San Pedro gives this delivery a special meaning,” said Padilla.
