During the most important festival of artisanal fishing, the Puerto Chacabuco cove became the fourth in the region that will be managed by the artisanal fishermen themselves.

The ceremony took place on June 29th in San Pedro, where Sernapesca delivered the Maritime Destination Allocation Agreement to the Bahía Chacabuco Independent Artisanal Fishermen’s Workers Union, which makes this space in the Puerto Aysén commune a new hub for economic development.

The administration of the cove will give them the opportunity to diversify their economic activity and develop new initiatives beyond fishing and the extraction of resources from the sea, such as the implementation and administration of a beach space, beach land and portion of water, for the use of the artisanal vessels of the Union and the fishing community of Puerto Chacabuco; and also the creation of infrastructure to support artisanal fishing, services and tourism activities.

The President of the Independent Workers’ Union of Artisanal Fishermen of Bahía Chacabuco, Raúl Alvarez, shared his feelings about this important milestone for the cove. “Our parents and grandparents were always in this place, and for us to complete this delivery is super important, since we can project ourselves in the field of fishing, being able to sell fresh fish, we have many projects to do here. We thank Felipe Fondesa of Sernapesca who always helped us and accompanied us in this process.”

This milestone was achieved once the Intersectoral Committee approved the administration plan presented by the Union. The Intersectoral Committee is chaired by the Regional Director (s) of Sernapesca and is composed of the Seremi of Economy, Regional Director of DOP, Zonal Director of Subpesca, and a representative of the Navy, the latter only with the right to speak.

This initiative seeks not only to involve the community, but also to support fisheries management and add value to this cove that currently lands sea silversides, sea bass, southern sardines, crabs, marble crabs and sea urchins.

Finally, the Regional Director(s) of Sernapesca, Jorge Padilla, highlighted the perseverance and work of all the fishermen. “Today a dream comes true for all the fisherwomen of Caleta Puerto Chacabuco and for us it is very important to be able to make this delivery happen so that the Union can advance in the economic development of its area. Furthermore, making it coincide with Saint Peter takes on a special meaning to this delivery.
