The Chilean National Team Ricardo Gareca is risking his life this Saturday in the Copa America 2024 versus Canadain a match that, because it is the last in group A, will be played simultaneously with the Argentina vs Peru. The Albiceleste is the leader and qualified with six points, followed by Canada with three, and further behind La Roja and Peru with one.

Chile does not depend on itself to advance to the quarterfinals of the continental tournament, since it must be attentive to what happens in the Albiceleste duel against the Incaicos, since the result of that match can harm the national team.

The results that Chile needs to advance in the Copa América

The most important thing for Chile not to be mathematically eliminated is to beat Canada by any score., since this would surpass the North Americans in points. A draw or a defeat quickly leaves La Roja out. Also pending what happens in the other simultaneous match, Chile needs one of the following two combinations to qualify second in group A (there is no better third like in the Euro Cup):

  1. Beat Canada; and hope that Peru loses or draws with Argentina
  2. Beat Canada; and in the event that Peru beats Argentina, achieve the tiebreaker with the Peruvians according to Conmebol criteria

Conmebol tiebreaker criteria

If Chile and Peru are tied with four points After their respective victories on this date, the following teams come into play: Conmebol criteria for a tiebreaker in the group stagewhich are in the following order:

  1. Greater goal difference;
  2. Highest number of goals scored
  3. Best result in direct confrontation (Chile tied 0-0 with Peru)
  4. Fewest red cards received by the team;
  5. Fewest yellow cards received by the team;
  6. Conducting a draw.

As before the match Chile and Peru are equal in everything, what is in favor of La Roja is that The Peruvian team has one sent off (Miguel Araujo)so in addition to having the obligation to beat Canada with a good result, you must be careful with finishing with the eleven on the playing field to have that gap in case the fourth tiebreaker criterion is reached.
