Córdoba’s flagship sport remains at the forefront of the country, more alive than ever, after placing fourth in the overall table of the National Youth Boxing Championship held in Cali, Valle del Cauca, where 24 other departments participated.

Above in the general table are only Valle, Antioquia and Atlántico. However, the balance is positive, because after 12 years, Córdoba boxing once again achieved a gold medal in national tournaments, this time thanks to the fists of Edwin Calderón Polo, who played the department’s anthem.

With the support of the governor of Córdoba, Erasmo Zuleta, through the Departmental Sports Institute, headed by Luis Aldana Dumar, the delegation that traveled to the tournament was formed, made up of 18 athletes, five coaches and a methodologist.

“We are the cradle of boxers and we continue to prove it. 18 people from Córdoba qualified for the National Youth Games after participating in a National Championship in Cali. Congratulations, titans, what great news, we are fourth in the general table!” said the departmental leader after learning the results obtained in the competition held from June 20 to 29.

In addition to the qualification of the entire team to the National Youth Games, Eje Cafetero 2024, Córdoba also won three silver medals with Onelsy Garcés, Katry Pantoja and Dana Pantoja García; while Maryoris Galván and Santiago Vergara won bronze.

“We can be better”

At the end of the awards, the president of the Departmental Boxing League, Over Vanegas Caraballo, stated that “since 2012 Córdoba had not won a gold medal, it has already won one in men’s, we also achieved three silver medals and two bronze medals. . That is, we have positive results.”

For the experienced strategist, these achievements in Cali predict an excellent harvest of medals for the National Youth Games.

“We can say that Córdoba could have three gold medals in November at the National Youth Games. We know that we can do a better job with the boys, with a concentration and training sessions in well-structured preparatory competitions with them, we can ensure that Córdoba effectively obtains those gold medals,” he said.

Finally, Professor Vanegas thanked the support provided by the methodologists, physiotherapists and Indeportes Córdoba directives to achieve the preparation of the Córdoba boxers.
