The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) issued a statement on the surveillance alert for some departments of Colombia, regarding the arrival of the Tropical Storm Berylwhich has been strengthening in the Caribbean Sea region.

From Ideam they indicated that Beryl could become a hurricane by June 30 and would approach Colombian territory on Tuesday, July 2 or Wednesday, July 3.

“Beryl is expected to strengthen into a hurricane when it reaches the Windward Islands on Sunday, June 30 or early Monday, July 1. Its maximum proximity to Colombian territory is expected for Tuesday, July 2 or Wednesday, July 3, however, There is significant uncertainty in the trajectory that the system takes within the Caribbean Sea“, the document reads.

It would also affect the coastal sectors of the Colombian Caribbean Region (La Guajira, Magdalena, Atlántico, Bolívar, Sucre, Córdoba, Antioch and Chocó) and for the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.

The Ideam pointed out that there is already a constant monitoring of this natural phenomenonwhich has been moving close to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles.

National Tropical Cyclone Response Plan is activated.

• It is suggested to keep protocols, contingency plans and all response preparation actions active, given the possibility of Tropical Storm Beryl entering the Caribbean Sea.

• The were activated Departmental Disaster Risk Management Councils (CDGRD) and Municipal Council for Disaster Risk Management (CMGRD), remain attentive to the special communications and alerts issued by the entities of the IDEAM tropical cyclone alert technical table, General Maritime Directorate (DIMAR), AEROCIVIL, Colombian Air Force and National Unit for Disaster Risk Management UNGRD.
