Making science fiction is not easy. Not only because they tend to have higher costs, although there are low-budget films that are real wonders like this, but because on many occasions the premises are too implausible, the plots too weak or the films too ambitious. This is not the case of the one we bring you today.
Directed by Alex Garland, who was also behind one of the best science fiction series in history‘Annihilation’ is a psychological horror film with science fiction and starring Natalie Portman. It could have become a franchise but was considered too complex. Unfairly, because for Espinof’s experts it was “a masterpiece of science fiction that deserved to be seen in the cinema”. And for us too.
‘Annihilation’, an unjustly forgotten masterpiece
According to the official synopsis, the story follows Lena, a biologist and former soldier who joins a mission to discover what happened to her husband in Area X. This sinister and mysterious phenomenon that is expanding along the North American coast hides too many secrets. Inside, the expedition encounters a landscape and mutated beings, as dangerous as they are beautiful, which endanger their lives and mental health.
This science fiction thriller is the adaptation of the first of the novels that make up the trilogy of ‘The Southern Reach‘by Jeff VanderMeer. Alex Garland, who previously directed the absolutely fascinating ‘Ex-Machina’, not only directs the protagonist, he also adapts the script. Along with Natalie Portman we find Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, Oscar Isaac, Benedict Wong and Jennifer Jason Leigh. A cast of ten.

It is a completely hypnotic film, with a conclusion that will resonate in your head, overwhelming visual beauty and a plot that becomes increasingly complex and challenging. It’s interesting, overwhelming, tough, dark, intense and genuinely terrifying. It is perfect and yet it did not succeed as it should have when it was released in 2018. An excellent exercise that embraced the purest, cerebral and transcendental part of science fiction.
