The strange case of the death of one of the actresses of ‘The Exorcist’: “A horrible scene”

ANDIn 1973, ‘The Exorcist’ was released in cinemas, a horror film that would end up becoming a classic of the genre. The film, which tells of the diabolical possession of a 12-year-old girl and the exorcism to which she is subjected, was directed by William Friedkin. After its release, it achieved tremendous success and, to this day, is one of the quintessential works of horror cinema..

In ‘Cuarto Milenio’, Cuatro’s space presented by Iker Jiménez, they wanted to talk about the curse of the film by telling a story unknown to most people, that of the death of Mary Ure. “The most terrifying movie of all time. There are a couple of things I want to tell you. (…) It caused an enormous psychic and mental impact on a global level. Even ambulances had to be outside the cinemas for what could occur inside. For me, the masterpiece of terror,” said Jimnez.

“Fifty years ago, something happened that many of you will not know about. We have told you about the supposed curse of ‘The Exorcist’… There are deaths, suicides, etc. (…) We are going to tell you an incredible storybut real”, in this way the presenter of the Mediaset space introduced the story.

The incredible story of Mary Ure’s death related to the curse of ‘The Exorcism’

“London Comedy Theatre, April 1975. A substitute actress… This is how this chronicle begins.” Carmen Porter was at the program table to give more details about Mary Ure’s life. After the premiere of ‘The Exorcist’, taking advantage of the popularity of the film and the genre, a play called ‘The Exorcism’ was released.a work that in a certain way “drank a little from the whole fashion for demonic movies and novels and the psychosis that was out there,” Porter explained.

According to some witnesses, Mayr Ure interpreted an incredible demonic possession. “The best representation of a possessed woman in a play, she even changed her voice,” said Iker Jiménez. A few weeks later, Mary went to a party after a performance. Her husband left a few hours early because he had a shoot very soon the next day. “The next day, tragic news. A horrible scene: Mary is in her bed, surrounded by vomiting, with a terrible grimace, as they themselves describe”said the collaborator of ‘Cuarto Milenio’.

The only thing that could be done was to certify his death. “Did ‘The Exorcism’ kill Mary Ure? The doctors have not given a completely clinical explanation for her death,” said Iker Jiménez. After that, the play stopped for a week since many actors did not want to continue in it.
