To you, what should Garfield’s voice sound like? Since Jim Davies created him as a comic strip in 1978, the mythical chubby orange cat has starred in two live-action films and three animated films. In this fourth animated example which is ‘Garfield: The Movie’, The American voice of Chris Pratt has been dubbed by one of the most famous actors and directors in our country.
Santiago Segura (‘Father There Is No More Than One’) already voiced beloved animated characters from ‘Monsters, SA’ and ‘Hotel Transilvania’ before dubbing the most egocentric cat (and that’s saying something). “This is what Garfield sounded like in my head”praises his partner in multiple audiovisual projects and enemy in the animated film, Alaska. Along with the singer of ‘Who Cares?’ Sure, we have also discussed with the chef and ‘Masterchef’ jury Pepe Rodríguez What makes Garfield still such an effective product almost 50 years later.
As can be seen with her hilarious voice as the villain Jinx, Olvido Gara (Alaska) already had the experience of having dubbed Shizuka in ‘Stand By Me Doraemon’ and the character of Awkwafina in ‘SpongeBob SquarePants: A Hero rescue’. Now, she is the voice of a cat who seeks revenge against Garfield’s father. As a fundamental part of Spanish cultural history, Alaska has shared with us some reflections on what really remains and why she believes this character could not be created today.
“If someone created a Garfield today, he wouldn’t eat the same thing, because it wouldn’t be seen well. I’m very glad that the meaning of what Garfield is has not been perverted to adapt it to times that are a little more politically correct. Things are as they are.”
In addition to the main cat and his archenemy, Pepe Rodríguez (‘Masterchef’) makes his debut in animated dubbing with one of the bullies. Of course, as Santiago Segura warns, “It’s a little hard to recognize him”. The director of ‘Full Train! Destino Asturias ‘reveals that he even proposed the cook and jury as the voice of two different roles for his “ability to change voice that surprised me a lot”. In the end, he was only able to keep this cat, but Segura emphasizes that he did give it a good rating, “not like him like me on ‘Masterchef Celebrity'”.
Lasagna yes or no?
As an enthusiastic cook and dog owner, Pepe Rodríguez believes that “Cats eat almost everything”including even “a lasagna (…) like everything that is Italian. “Who doesn’t like pasta?” However, her dubbing partner and boss in the film thinks otherwise. “I don’t think you know cats, Pepe”Alaska says.
Although it is not true or healthy, the ‘Masterchef’ jury assures that this animal adventure where “children will see compulsive eating” it will be something very “funny” that will make the whole family laugh starting Wednesday, May 1 in all theaters.
