Luca Guadagnino’s new film, starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, has become the protagonist of social networks

It’s impossible not to have seen it because it’s all over social media: the churros scene Rivals It has gone viral and it was not in the script.

Rivals, Luca Guadagnino’s new film, stars Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. The story follows these three characters, tennis players involved in a love triangle, and there is more than one scene in which sexual tension is the order of the day. Not just between O’Connor or Faist with Zendaya, but also between the two actors. The one with churros is one of them.

In ‘Rivals’ the kisses are real: Zendaya’s film is equal parts passion and tension

In the viral scene, Faist and O’Connor’s characters talk very close to each other while eating a churro. “What I will say is that… that was my first churro and I hadn’t eaten anything that day”says O’Connor in Capital FM.

As he adds:

I was hungry and eating my first churro and churros are extraordinary. So I ate mine and then his [señala a Faist]

It was Zendaya who revealed that that moment was not in the script. “The churro was not written, right? The churro was something that you saw that worked, with Luca?”, indicates the actress and producer of the film. Both interpreters have responded that the scene “It’s a Luca thing”.

“So, when Josh is holding his churro close to my mouth, it’s so obvious that I’m going to take a bite,” Faist said in an interview with USA Today. “That’s the great thing about working with Josh: He sets you up for something and I give him the ball back. It’s like a tennis match. “We just give ourselves something to play with.”

JEALOUSY AND FRIENDSHIP

Guadgnino spoke about this scene with the New York Times. The director pointed out that the scene “represents a moment and evolution in the friendship that has changed course because of a third person”.

As he explained:

What we see is, basically, a kind of game, a flash between two young people for Tashi, but at the same time, a jealousy that ignites a relationship. Also because these two guys are probably jealous of each other not just because of Tashi

For Guadagnino, the scene represents what happens between the two throughout the film. They are in “a constant battle” and “they are fighting, but taking care of each other” at the same time.
