While Henry Cavill’s Superman never met his end in the DCEU, Zack Snyder is opening up about what the conclusion to his version of Man of Steel would look like.
Zack Snyder reveals what the conclusion to Henry Cavill’s Superman would have been if his DCEU franchise had continued. One of the big unfinished chapters in the DCEU movie timeline was Cavill’s Superman story, as the British star returned in 2022 in the post-credits scene of Black Adam. However, any initial plans being considered were scrapped in favor of James Gunn’s new DC Universe.
In a new interview with GQ, Snyder talked more about what he had in store for Cavill’s Superman story following the end of the film. Zack Snyder’s Justice League. As the Man of Tomorrow would have dealt with Darkseid, he would have brought Cavill’s Superman trilogy full circle, as he shared the following: “I was going to have to succumb to the Anti-life, be destroyed, go back in time and then have the opportunity for this battle against Darkseid. If you will… that would have finished his trilogy of becoming this guardian and, in a way, bringing him back to the humanity of him,” he said.
How could Zack Snyder’s planned ending for Henry Cavill’s Superman still happen?
Although Gunn’s DC Universe will be the top priority for DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery when it comes to adapting IPs based on the comic book brand, Snyder’s conclusion of Cavill’s Superman could still happen in the future. One of the banners that DC Studios will also operate under is the Elseworlds concept, with films and/or television shows that take place outside of the main timeline of the DC Universe. That’s where stories like Batman and jokerallowing you to explore alternate takes with certain DC characters.
Depending on the timing, Snyder and Cavill could return at some point to finish the Superman story by turning it into an Elseworlds story. Whether it’s the DCEU or the Snyderverse, that’s now considered Elseworlds, as Gunn’s DC Universe continuity takes priority. But at least in that sense, fans who were interested in what Snyder had started with Cavill’s Superman can finally come to a proper conclusion.
However, it’s worth keeping in mind that Snyder and Cavill have several jobs lined up, from the universe Rebel Moon of the filmmaker at Netflix until Cavill will soon prepare to star in and executive produce a live-action universe of Warhammer for Amazon. If live action was too complicated to pull off due to scheduling, they could always tackle Cavill’s Superman arc through animation or as a graphic novel. Hopefully, one way or another, there will be a time when Cavill’s trilogy arc as Superman comes to a proper end.
