A recent survey clarifies that the preferred duration of viewers is 92 minutes
The length of a film is often talked about as a possible hook to watch it. It is obvious that this means that it is not very high, since it is common for laziness to take over if you see that it takes up to three hours. However, What exactly is the perfect length for a movie? A recent survey gives the definitive answer to that question.
According to a Talker Research survey of about 2,000 Americans, the length preferred by viewers is 92 minutes. Furthermore, interest is decreasing noticeably as it expands. For example, only 15% of those surveyed consider films that last more than 2 hours acceptable, reducing to 2% when they exceed 2 and a half hours.
Furthermore, respondents stated that watched an average of two movies that were too long during the last two months, and 23% of the participants claim that there were three or more titles with which this happened. All of this clashes head-on with the tendency for the year’s highest-grossing films in the United States to be increasingly longer – think, for example, of the long duration of both ‘Avatar’ and ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’, and surely the third part lasts even longer.
Subtitles yes or no?
The study also focused on another striking topic: How many viewers are willing to watch subtitled movies? 33% say they never use subtitles, while 16% say they always do. The generational difference is notable, as the percentage increases to 30% in Generation Z viewers and 23% in Millennials, while it falls to 13% in Generation X and 12% in Boomers.
Any example of a 92 minute movie? ‘The Night of the Hunter’, the masterpiece directed by Charles Laughton in 1955, lasts just that long. Also ‘Nobody’, the best heir to the John Wick saga that we have had so far – curiously in the franchise led by Keanu Reeves each new installment lasts longer than the previous one -, ‘Bitelchús’, ‘Super Mario Bros. The Movie’, ‘The witch’, ‘Transporter’ or ‘Kung Fu Panda’.
