The Punisher: Marvel redefines the meaning of its skull and it is even more sinister

The Punisher He is one of the most popular antiheroes of Marvela character who has starred in many of the publisher’s most sordid and violent stories and who has left an indelible mark in his most recent television adaptation with the version of Frank Castle of ‘Daredevil‘, interpreted by Jon Bernthalwho will return next year as part of the cast of ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘, now as part of the UCM. And despite having a story so well known to everyone, Marvel Comics has decided to redefine the origin of his iconic skull on his chestbeing -if possible- even more sinister.

The Punisher’s origins in Vietnam

This is extracted from the new comic Get Fury #1 of ‘The Punisher‘, whose first issue has already appeared in the United States. So much so that Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows -creators of this new story Marvel Comics– have chosen to explore the origin of the mythical symbol of the character, taking us to the Vietnam War, where Frank Castle was captain of the United States Army.

At a certain point in the conflict, in the middle of the trench, Frank appears sitting in his camp reading a letter from his beloved wife. next to the skull of an enemy. At that moment, two soldiers, surprised by the scene, ask their superior why macabre trophyto which Frank himself responds that “It’s good for morale”.

According to Frank, he found that skull among the rubble of some bunkers that were sprayed with napalm, attesting to what ruthless that he was already at that timebefore becoming The Punisher either The Punisher. Of course, that is the same attitude that the antihero would later demonstrate on the streets of New York, rampaging without scruple against his enemies.

Let us remember that at the beginning of the character in Marvel Comics, sported a skull that was more restrained in size; nor was it until the vision of John Romita Sr. when The Punisher’s skull would take up his entire torsothus becoming the symbol most feared by the criminals he hunted.
