We tell you where to see all the films and where Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is in the saga, its latest release in theaters.

Marcos Yasif

Film and TV Editor

I am the boy who will tell you all the latest news in film and television in 3DJuegos. I am passionate about science fiction, fantasy, superheroes and movie curiosities, those little behind-the-scenes stories of the directors and actors we have been following since we were little. My favorite saga? Star Trek. My favorite character? Superman, although lately a little more John Wick. One last thing, I promise not to bore you too much in my topics. LinkedIn

50 years have passed since the premiere of Planet of the Apes, the legendary film adaptation of Pierre Boulle’s science fiction novel of the same name in which Charlton Heston traveled to a world where humanity was not the dominant primate species. That film was a resounding success and kicked off a series with several more releases on the big and small screen.

We will experience the last one this May with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which seeks to give way to a new batch of stories that serve as an intermediate point between the trilogy of origins of the franchise and the original installments of the same. But how many films are there and how are they located in the chronology of the saga? Unlike Star Wars or the Marvel MCU, this It is not a series where there is a very pre-established canonthere are currently several timelines.

Before continuing, it is worth making it clear that in this topic we will only focus on his films, leaving out other types of productions that we have had in the IP, among them a couple of very interesting television series and several TV-movies. We will not talk about comics and books either, beyond citing the original work. Without further ado, we welcome you to the chronological order of Planet of the Apes.

Is there a connection between the original films and the new ones?

Quick answer: no, there isn’t. In fact, currently we could cite, at least, up to three alternative realities seen in the works of 20th Century Studios on the big screen. All this, we repeat, without mentioning the series. However, all of them share a common point: designing a bleak world where several centuries in the future a group of astronauts land discovering how your fellow humans have been enslaved or are at the mercy of the apes.

This is true in Planet of the Apes starring Charlton Heston in 1968, in Planet of the Apes directed by Tim Burton in 2001, and in the Rise of the Planet of the Apes trilogy begun in 2011, where we can read in the front page of a newspaper how a manned ship has been lost in space. But From there there are discrepancies for the years in which they are set, and for the role that Cesar plays in the 2011 trilogy and in the original film saga.

The three ‘sagas’ of Planet of the Apes

The original saga (1972 – 3978)

The original saga is mainly divided between two eras separated by two millennia that, and here there is debate, form a time loop. Basically, everything begins when a group of astronauts land on an unknown world dominated by apes, triggering a series of events that, sorry for the spoilers, will cause several monkeys to travel to the United States of the 70s, triggering, in turn, , all the events that create Planet of the Apes.

Planet of the Apes (1968).

  3. Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) – Set in 1973 (Disney+)
  4. Rise of the Apes (1972) – Set in 1993 (Disney+)
  5. Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1974) – Set in 2003 and 2600 (Disney+)

Tim Burton’s movie (2029 – 5021)

Since it has not had a sequel, there is not much to explain at this point. Basically, this film is a remake with its narrative differences where a future space mission, located in 2029 (the film was released in 2001), ends with its protagonist on the surface of a strange world inhabited by monkeys. Unlike the original films, this is not Earth. To make matters worsethe end is a cliffhanger from those of aúpa which admits several theories that are difficult to prove.

Planet of the Apes (2001).

  1. Planet of the Apes (2001) – Set in 5021 (Disney+)

The saga of Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011-)

After the failure of Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Fox buried the franchise for several years until it decided to make prequels that do not allow for much complication and that continue to expand. His latest installment, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, will take us to a world halfway between Planet of the Apes and these latest films. It will tell a story located 300 years later from War for the Planet of the Apes.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014).

  1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) – Set in the 2010s (Disney+)
  2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) – Set in 2026 (Disney+)
  3. War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) – Set in 2028 (Disney+)
  4. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) – Set in the 24th century

In what order to watch Planet of the Apes

If you came in expecting to see a clear answer to this question, you may have been disappointed, but yes we can give you an order to follow based on films that do not conflict excessively if you see them that often, beyond the problems that 50 years of technical advances in cinemas can offer you. Thus, this is the order to see the Planet of the Apes saga chronologically.

  1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) – Disney+
  2. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) – Disney+
  3. War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) – Disney+
  4. Planet of the Apes (1968) – Disney+
  5. Return to the Planet of the Apes (1970) – Disney+

War for the Planet of the Apes.

From there, everything can get very confusing. just as Xataka’s colleagues remind us, so perhaps it would be good to do without watching Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Rise of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1974). However, it is to be expected that as 20th Century Studios makes films, a remake will end up being made that better connects the trilogy, or tetralogy now, of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Where can I watch the Planet of the Apes saga?

Here we have good news. Except for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which will be released in theaters on May 10, all of the films mentioned here are available through the Disney+ classic and contemporary film catalog. Come on, if you want, from today you can have a marathon.
