“We loved him. He was fearless, funny, gruff, irascible and beautiful”said Astin, who plays Samwise Gamgee, on stage at the London event.

Comic Con Liverpool paid tribute to Hill in a statement: “We are heartbroken to hear the news of Bernard Hill’s passing. A great loss.
Mortensen was another of the actors who also remembered the late Hill during a presentation: ““I want to dedicate this conversation to an actor named Bernard Hill, he played King Théoden in the movies. He was my dear friend. Long live King Théoden!”

For his part, director Peter Jackson issued a statement regarding the death of the beloved actor:
“It is difficult to imagine a world without Bernard Hill; To say it was full of life is an understatement. His portrayal of Theoden, King of Rohan, is loved by millions and is a testament to his brilliance as an actor. But We will remember him as a deeply loyal and loving friend.. Farewell, mighty warrior. On behalf of the entire cast and crew of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, you will be greatly missed.”
