Francis Ford Coppola’s new film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Among the most anticipated films to be released this year is Megalopolis of Francis Ford Coppola. The film has been a passion project for the acclaimed director and was made at significant personal cost, without any studio backing, and is seeking a distribution deal. The sci-fi film will debut soon on the Cannes Film Festival and fans finally got to see a sneak peek of the film.

The two-minute trailer shows the character of Adam Driver, Ceaser, teetering on the roof of a skyscraper. As he approaches the edge, he seems to think about jumping and, as gravity is about to take over, he shouts, “Time stops.” We see the cars on the street below stop in time, until Ceaser decides to let them move again.

What Megalopolis is about
The film follows Ceaser (Driver) as a New York-based architect who wants to rebuild the city as a utopia after a devastating disaster. However, to accomplish the feat, he must go through the city’s mayor, Frank Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito). Coppola says, in a statement, that the story takes place in a stylized New York portrayed as the world. “Cicero would be mayor during a time of great financial turmoil, such as the financial crisis under former Mayor Dinkins. Caesar, in turn, would be a master builder, a great architect, designer, and scientist combining elements of Robert Mosesas portrayed in the brilliant biography ‘The Power Broker’, with architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Raymond Loewy, Norman Bel Geddes or Walter Gropius.
The film will also star Aubrey Plaza, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Laurence Fishburne and Dustin Hoffman.
The feature was a long time in the making, although Coppola began writing it in the “last twelve years or so.” He cites a long bibliography of the people, artists and events that inspired him. Thus, fans can expect to see the influence of New York’s most interesting cases, such as the Claus von Bülow murder case, the Mary Cunningham and William Agee Bendix scandal, the appearance of financial reporter Maria Bartiromo, as well as the the city’s own financial crisis. The director added the influences: “So that everything in my story was true and happened in modern New York or ancient Rome. To that I added everything I had read or learned.”
Although the film’s theme revolves around love and loyalty, “Megalopolis echoed these sentiments, in which love was expressed in an almost crystalline complexity, our planet in danger and our human family almost in an act of suicide, until it becomes a very optimistic film that has faith that human beings have the genius to heal any problem that arises.”
Currently, Megalopolis does not have a release date or window.
