4 of the 8 highest-grossing films of 2024 are from China. These are the films that have included ‘Furiosa: From the Mad Max Saga’ and ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’

This 2024 is not being very positive for the majority of blockbusters released by Hollywood. It is true that ‘Dune 2’ is the highest-grossing film of the year, but there are many titles that have failed or have fallen far short of the expectations that executives had placed on them. In fact, this year something totally unusual is happening: 4 of the 8 highest-grossing films so far in 2024 are from China.

The top 8 box office today

The films from the Asian country that are currently in the top of 2024 are ‘Yolo’, ‘Pegasus 2’, ‘Article 20’ and ‘Bonnie Bears: Time Twist’. To put it in perspective, this is the top 8 global box office of the year so far:

  1. ‘Dune 2’ with 711 million dollars
  2. ‘Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire’ with 567 million
  3. ‘Kung Fu Panda 4’ with 542 million
  4. ‘Yolo’ with 498 million
  5. ‘Pegasus 2’ with 478 million
  6. ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ with 359 million
  7. ‘Article 20’ with 323 million
  8. ‘Bonnie Bears: Time Twist’ with 279 million

Everything indicates that it is a simple matter of time before ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ surpasses at least ‘Bonnie Bears: Time Twist’, while ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ or ‘Gru 4. Despicable Me’ They could perfectly dethrone ‘Dune 2’. In exchange, other Chinese productions will also arrive that could be a hit, but that is the situation right now.

This means that up to four Chinese feature films have comfortably surpassed productions as ambitious as ‘Furiosa’, ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’, ‘Imaginary Friends’ or ‘The Specialist’. It’s not a good sign for Hollywood at all, but let’s hope things change in the coming weeks.

In case you are curious, ‘Yolo’ is a sports comedy about a housewife who starts boxing, ‘Pegasus 2’ is the sequel to a sports drama that had great success in 2019, ‘Article 20’ is the new feature film Zhang Yimou and ‘Bonnie Bears: Time Twist’ is the tenth film in a successful animated saga that started as a television series.
