This 2024 is not being very positive for the majority of blockbusters released by Hollywood. It is true that ‘Dune 2’ is the highest-grossing film of the year, but there are many titles that have failed or have fallen far short of the expectations that executives had placed on them. In fact, this year something totally unusual is happening: 4 of the 8 highest-grossing films so far in 2024 are from China.

- ‘Yolo’ with 498 million

- ‘Article 20’ with 323 million
- ‘Bonnie Bears: Time Twist’ with 279 million
Everything indicates that it is a simple matter of time before ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ surpasses at least ‘Bonnie Bears: Time Twist’, while ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ or ‘Gru 4. Despicable Me’ They could perfectly dethrone ‘Dune 2’. In exchange, other Chinese productions will also arrive that could be a hit, but that is the situation right now.
This means that up to four Chinese feature films have comfortably surpassed productions as ambitious as ‘Furiosa’, ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’, ‘Imaginary Friends’ or ‘The Specialist’. It’s not a good sign for Hollywood at all, but let’s hope things change in the coming weeks.
