From ‘Coherence’ to ‘Arrival’: we explore some science fiction movies available on Prime Video

Science fiction is a genre that allows us to expand our imagination by exploring distant worlds and addressing themes ranging from the colonization of planets to the complex relationships between humans and advanced technology. On this occasion, we are going to explore three productions of this genre available in Prime Videoeach offering a unique and fascinating vision that includes encounters with alien beings, alternate realities and much more.

We start the journey of this selection with Life: Smart Lifea film released in 2017 under the direction of the Swedish filmmaker Daniel Espinosaalso known for his work in the controversial Morbius with Jared Leto (Suicide Squad). On this occasion, we follow the story of six astronauts who are crewing a space station and working on the most important discovery in history: describing the first trace of intelligent life outside of Earth. However, when they are close to their goal, things start to go wrong, unleashing a series of terrifying events.

Regarding the cast, this project has industry stars. Among them are Rebecca Ferguson (Mission Impossible, Dune, Silo, The Greatest Showman), Jake Gyllenhaal (The Hardcore, Brokeback Mountain, Donnie Darko), Ryan Reynolds (Free Guy, Deadpool, Imaginary friends), Hiroyuki Sanada (The Last Samurai, John Wick 4, Twilight of the Samurai), Olga Dihovichnaya (Twilight Portrait) and Ariyon Bakare (After the Rain).

We continue with Coherence, a cult science fiction film that became a phenomenon since its release in 2013. The plot follows a group of friends who meet for dinner just on the night that a comet will pass near Earth. As the comet crosses the sky, hidden secrets begin to come to light, and the door to parallel realities opens. This leads the main characters to face disconcerting situations and doubt their own identity. The film, directed by James Ward Byrkitstands out for its innovative approach and its ability to keep the viewer in a constant state of intrigue and tension, exploring the limits of perception and reality.

The interesting thing is that, normally, science fiction requires high budgets and large deployments in terms of production. However, Coherence It doesn’t follow that formula; It was made on a low budget and was filmed in five days, using only the director’s house. Even the actors and actresses did not have a solid script, but improvised most of the dialogues.

Last we have the arrival, an alien invasion film that moves away from what we normally imagine in this genre. The story follows Louise Banks, a renowned linguist, who is summoned by the military after the unexpected landing of several extraterrestrial ships in different parts of the planet.
