In recent years, Pixar has become the leading animation studio in presenting emotionally heavy themes, something it did again with “Inside Out.”
Some of his latest films like “Soul” of 2020 or “Grid” of 2022 are very concrete examples of this fight. In the case of “Soul”maybe a story about death, the afterlife and regrets was a bit much, leading parents to make their children watch other movies. The same could be said of “Grid”which addressed puberty and generational trauma in a way that not everyone received very well. They are excellent themes for cinema, but Pixar put too much effort into making their movies feel like therapy sessions, which can feel pretty exhausting.

Although Remorse would have inclined “Inside Out 2” to a too negative place, Riley’s new emotions are still quite heavy.
