In an interview with the program Desert Island Discs On BBC Radio 4, Spielberg commented: “I was a first year student at university and there was a girl I really liked. She agreed to let me take her to dinner, to a jazz club or to the movies, but she never, ever let me kiss her.”

He then added: “One time we were driving back from somewhere and pulled into the big parking lot next to the dorms on the Long Beach University campus. There ‘Michelle’ started playing. I think we heard it together for the first time on the radio and the melody is just heartbreakingly beautiful”.

“I look at her and she has tears in her eyes, and right before the song ends, she jumps next to me in the car and starts kissing me,” Spielberg closed.
