Birth of the star
The parents of CeeLo Green They were both firefighters. Both lost their lives before reaching the age of majority. Hence the artist clung to music like a burning nail, participating in the hip-hop band Goodie mob in the early 90s. Here we go with his first shooting star: although the band was active for a few years – they returned even after he triumphed alone decades later – their greatest success came with a top 10 album in the United States in 1998, ‘Still Standing‘, which became certified Gold in the country. During the recording of the group’s third album, CeeLo He became dissatisfied with the direction he was taking and decided to quit. In 2013 they would reunite for a new album and seven years later, for their last one to date. Peak moment
After the departure of Goodie Mob, Cee-Lo He tries his luck as a solo artist, signing with Arista and collaborating with several artists on the way to his solo debut. Things don’t go too well and after a couple of albums that receive little more than the affection of all these people, he decides to start another band with the producer DangerMouse. And here comes his second Shooting Star: Gnarls Barkley.
It was 2006 when the couple decided to get together and publish what, in the long term, would be the only hit of their career as a group. What a smash, yes. ‘crazy‘ became the first song to reach #1 in the United Kingdom only with digital downloads – a market that was just starting at the time – and ended up closing its career at #2 in Billboardgiving CeeLo Green their first resounding success, certified Quadruple Platinum in the United States. The song would be a real hit on a global scale, loved by the public and radio stations, which even today continue to play it as a true two-mile classic. You have to have lived in a cave to not know the beginning of the song and its chorus. The success of ‘crazy‘ led them to win two Awards Grammythose for Alternative Album and Best Urban / Alternative Performance.
But the thing remained there: three more singles from that album were devoured by the success of their lead single and by the time the duo announced their second album together, little hype It already existed: their comeback song barely made it through the British top 40 without hitting the American charts and the album had to be published ahead of time due to a complete leak on the internet. It barely sold a fifth of the debut and the duo would not release music again.

What happened next?
What are the chances that someone who has had the flute played twice will have it played a third time? Well, few, but we already told you that with CeeLo Green occurred. After abandoning the project Gnarls Barkley and participate in some soundtracks and reissues of his solo albums, CeeLo published – also in a hurry, due to a leak – his new single, ‘Fuck You‘, in 2010.
A single that had begun to go viral and needed to be legally available before its pirated version conquered the internet at the time. And thank goodness, because the song was once again a global smash that, just like ‘crazy‘, the radios still play it as an authentic soul-pop classic from recent decades. Of course they play the polite version, the fine one,’Forget You‘, which would also take him back to the Grammy and again to win the award for Urban / Alternative Interpretation. That is not very clear to us – it already happened to us in ‘crazy‘-, which has neither one nor the other.
As would happen with Gnarls Barkleythe project of CeeLo He wouldn’t give any more hits no matter how many singles were released from him – except in the UK, again, who love a bump in the charts after a one-hit-wonder – and since then, his albums have gone largely unnoticed. To date he has published three more, the last in 2020.
CeeLo Green He later worked on ‘The Voice‘, has participated in ‘Masked Singer‘… come on, he has tried to stay in the limelight as best he could. But of course, he has not made it easy for himself with the accusations of sexual violence and assault. He was finally found guilty of substance possession – there was not enough evidence to support the assault – and he spent three years on probation.
